Cây Ngọc Kỳ Lân, tên gọi khác là cây Sala, cây Đầu Lân, cây Hàm rồng, có tên khoa học là Couroupita guianensis, thuộc họ Couroupita guianensis; nguồn gốc Nam Mỹ. Cây đầu lân được nhà thực vật học người Pháp J.F. Aublet đặt danh pháp khoa học vào năm 1755.

Cây Sala (ngọc kỳ lân, đầu lân) phổ biến trong khu rừng tân nhiệt đới, đặc biệt là ở lưu vực sông Amazon. Nó có nguồn gốc ở Guyana (Nam Mỹ). Ngày nay cây này có thể tìm thấy ở Ấn Độ, miền nam dãy núi Hy Mã Lạp, và về sau được trồng nhiều nơi ở Nam Á và Đông Nam Á.

Sala là một loại cây thân gỗ, cây có thể cao tới 30-35m. Hoa Sala ra từ thân cây, suốt từ gốc lên, chùm hoa dài ra liên tục có thể tới 3m. Quả lớn tròn to đường kính quả 15–24 cm, có 200-300 hạt trong một quả.

Gắn với Phật Giáo :
Trong kinh điển Phật giáo, Đức Phật đản sinh ở gốc cây sala (Shorea robusta), trong vườn Lumbini (Lâm-tì-ni), và nhập diệt giữa hai cây sala tại Kusinara (Câu-thi-na). Ngoài ra, vị Phật thuộc Trang Nghiêm kiếp là Phật Tỳ Xá Phù cũng giác ngộ dưới gốc cây sala. Vì thế ngày nay, ngoài cây bồ-đề ra thì cây sala cũng được trồng tại các khuôn viên chùa chiền. Tuy nhiên, tại Sri Lanka, Thái Lan và một số quốc gia Phật giáo khác thì cây sala thường bị nhầm lẫn với cây đầu lân này, cũng như với cây vô ưu (Saraca asoca). Do dó tại các chùa chiền cũng thường trồng cây đầu lân. Trong giới chơi cây cảnh ở Việt Nam, cây này có tên là cây ngọc kỳ lân, đầu lân hay hàm rồng.

Sử dụng làm thuốc :
Quả cây đầu lân có tính kháng sinh, kháng nấm, sát khuẩn và có tác dụng giảm đau. Cây được sử dụng để chữa bệnh cảm lạnh và đau dạ dày. Nước uống làm từ các lá được sử dụng để chữa bệnh da, và Shamans (ở Nam Mỹ) đã được sử dụng ngay cả bộ phận của cây để điều trị bệnh sốt rét. Bên trong quả có thể khử trùng vết thương và lá non chữa đau răng.
