Cây cỏ bàng hay còn gọi là cây bàng, cói bàng, có tên khoa học là Lepironia articulata, thuộc chi Lepironia nằm trong họ Cói(Cyperaceae). Là loài cây mọc hoang dại ở hầu khắp khu vực đồng bằng sông Cửu Long và được biết đến như một nguyên liệu trời phú để người dân ở đây phát triển làng nghề thủ công mỹ nghệ.

Cây cỏ bàng có thân dưới (căn hành) cứng, to khoảng 8–10 mm, nằm ngang trong bùn. Thân cỏ bàng thẳng đứng cao khoảng 1 m, có ngấn ngang, đáy có 3-4 bẹ, bao nhau cao 15–20 cm. Gié hoa ở chót thân (tức là ngọn) cao khoảng 1,5-2,0 cm và rộng đến 1 cm. Bông quả cao 3–4 mm. Vòi nhụy chẻ hai, trổ bông quanh năm. Cỏ bàng thường mọc ở vùng đất ngập nước phèn chua, nhiễm mặn như ở Đồng Tháp, Hà Tiên.

Cây cỏ bàng khi được phơi khô thì rất dai và chắc

Từ rất lâu người dân trong vùng đã biết khai thác nguồn nguyên liệu từ cỏ bàng để làm ra những sản phẩm thủ công mỹ nghệ đáp ứng nhu cầu cuộc sống hằng ngày như đan đệm, làm nón, bao bì, làm nóp, giỏ xách, lợp nhà tranh…
